I recommend Dr Ph Martins liquid water colours for colour (quite expensive but worth every penny) and a decent tube of black, ph martins black sucks. and keep trying...

Also, I suggest taking a day to just experiment with your watercolours, get a proper feel for them, and see how transparent you can make your washes.
